A New Type of Climate Disinformation: “We Need Ready-Made Solutions”
In an interview with The Guardian, André Corrêa do Lago warns that the world is facing a new method of undermining anthropogenic climate change . In recent years, the consequences of the climate crisis have become increasingly visible, with temperature records being broken around the world and extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe. Climate denialists have changed their narrative somewhat, and climate policy is now being attacked not for its scientific basis, but for its alleged economic inefficiency.
As the diplomat points out, the new kind of climate denial could be just as dangerous as the earlier undermining of the scientific consensus on the issue. The head of this year's Conference of the Parties says his main task will be to counter attempts by some interest groups to stop the transformation of the global economy into a low-carbon one.
Climate Disinformation: A Diplomat on a New Kind of Populism“This is a new kind of opposition to climate action,” André Corrêa do Lago told the Guardian. “We are witnessing attempts to discredit climate policy. Today, it is no longer possible to deny climate change using scientific arguments. That is why we are seeing a shift – towards denying that economic actions that curb climate change can be beneficial for the economy and for citizens.”
“The new populism is trying to show [that fighting climate change is not working]. Now it’s the turn of those who believe in fighting climate change to show and prove that fighting climate change is possible and that it can be associated with economic benefits and a better quality of life,” says Corrêa do Lago.
